Pyramid will again open to fishing on October 1st. A tradition held by local anglers for many years. The Lore of the World’s Largest Cutthroat Trout attracts attention from all over the world these days and we are excited to see what this season has to offer.

We had an amazing summer. Near or even below normal air temperatures for much of the hot part of the year. After a nearly normal winter in regard to snowpack and water for the lake it looks like everything is going to be perfect when first light sends anglers out in force on October 1st.
The surface temps of the lake this summer reached the 70 degree mark as usual sending the trout into the depths of the lake searching for cooler water temps and more oxygen. It remains to be seen how deep they had to go this time around.

When the lake opens the fish will be deep for sure and a combination of fishing from shore in areas where you can reach deep enough water to fish from the lake in a boat or a smaller craft like a float tube, kayak or pontoon boat. Shore anglers will be limited for a while until the water temps cool down. Not the best time of year for shore fishing. If you know how to fish the lake in October or you have seen our videos, then you are salivating right now waiting for the first tug of the season.
Being able to find at least 30 feet of water is really important at the beginning of the season. Sometimes even deeper. The Trout we are looking for are all eating Tui Chub Minnows and the takes are aggressive and the fish fight really hard. You need to get something in front of them that looks like a minnow. Find the right water depth and you have yourself a shot a real life monster trout.

As the water cools down everything starts to change. Cooler surface temps mean more oxygen and more trout looking around for food. This happens sometime towards the end of October. The trout start to spend more time cruising the shallows and the minnows head for the depths of the lake for the winter months to again hide.
The second season starts in early November when the water is cooler now and we drag our ladders back out and approach the lake from the shoreline again. Ladder Rentals | Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing. We normally have great success this time of year with the end of November and the first of December being hot! Most fish are caught with shooting heads and Wooly worms and Beetles this time of year, but it is never a wrong time to fish an indo rig either. Usually, the same beaches we targeted in October out of our boats are where we start from shore. It can be as easy as the fish just moved in shallower in the same spot. At this point in the season, it starts to get important to fish the weather again and look for days with some chop on the water and or cloud cover. Fishing with fast sinking lines and weighted flies is the only way you can catch fish this time of year. The fish are in at least 20 feet of water if not even deeper and this is normal. Jig flies such as the Tui Chui or the Bottom Dweller are what we use most and how we catch most of our big fish. Balanced Minnows and Deep Water Wooly Buggers are also effective with fast sinking lines.

Make sure if you are headed out to the lake and fishing from a tube or something similar you have a life jacket, an anchor and a depth finder. Finidng the right depth and staying stationary are the 1st keys to fishing our Jig flies.

Looking at the forecast, it appears we have another storm or two on the horizon. The air temperatures are also going to be below normal. What does this all mean? The effective spring season at Pyramid Lake is going to be late. Maybe three to four weeks late. April has a chance to be one of the best we have seen in a few years. The May and June forecast also looks better than usually as well. We should be able to fish the lake effectively right up until the close of the season on June 30.

We have been very fortunate to experience some great days so far. Knowing the lake and how it changes with the weather and the water conditions is very important. Especially during tougher conditions. We are catching fish and we are able to use a few different techniques. The stripping bite has been a great way to start the day and if you like to feel your grabs you can stick with this all day.

Bloody Mary Wooly worms, Martini Olive’s and Midnight Cowboys fished in tandem with a White Ghost Tadpole or a Chartreuse and White Beetle is going to be as effective as anything. Let your flies and fly line sink right to the bottom and retrieve all the way to your ladder.

Indicator rigs are working really well when there are fish around. Getting the depth correct and knowing which midges to use and what sizes are the most common mistakes. Red Wine Banded midges are working very well as are both Wino patterns and the G.T. midge.

The fishing at Pyramid is only going to get better as we move forward. If you have not made your trip to the lake yet, now is the time to start thinking about it. There are a lot of Pyramid fisherman that rely on past experience, old ways of thinking and the idea that Pyramid is an easy fishery. Pyramid is like any other fly-fishing trout fishery. 80% of the fish are caught by 20% of the anglers. Hopefully our reports and information on our website will help you to keep up with ever changing conditions and fishing techniques at the lake.

Right now, fish are eating just about everything preparing for the spawn. Conditions still are the most important piece of the puzzle, but location plays a part as well. The shallower beaches are still not holding many fish except for low light periods. Windy days and cloudy days are the best. These situations are always going to play a part. Size 12-14 midges are catching a lot of fish, especially on calmer days and smaller Woolybuggers and tadpoles’ seam to also be the best. Pyramid is a time spent on the water fishery and if you can put in the time, you will eventually get rewarded. Our online store is fully stocked. Our flies are the same flies we use for ourselves and our clients and have a proven track record. These are not generic flies sold in most stores.
