Our Pyramid Lake flies have been designed by our guides and friends and are the most sought after fly patterns for Pyramid Lake by far. We have and use flies from the old, now closed Reno Fly Shop Staff, We also carry Ike Berry’s Original Pyramid Lake Beetle. We have flies designed by Andy Burk, Rob Anderson, Ike Berry, Chris Evison, Phil Rowley, Bill Ladner, Joe Winchester, Rich Moomaw and Chris Wharton to name a few
Flies are a huge part of being successful at Pyramid Lake. Our most popular patterns, the Maholo Nymph and the Maholo Midge have caught 100’s of 10 pound plus fish over the years and continue to be used by most Pyramid Lake anglers year after year. Our Woolybugger and Beetle selections are all original designs.
In the last two years Balanced Leeches and Balanced Minnows have made their way on to the scene at Pyramid Lake. We have been using these flies at the lake for years now and have designed and fine tuned them to be once again the best of the best. Pyramid Lake Balanced Leech patterns are great fall and bad weather flies.
Maholo Nymph
The Maholo Nymph is maybe the most popular fly at Pyramid Lake. It can be used either under an indicator or stripped slowly along the bottom (see techniques). It is tied commercially by Umpqua Feather Merchants in four colors currently. Maholo Midge
Maholo Midges are used by pretty much every angler who fishes with a floating line and an indicator at Pyramid Lake. The “Albino Wino” version pictured left is without a doubt the #1 selling midge for Pyramid Lake by any fly shop that carries Pyramid Lake specific flies. This fly is also tied commercially by Umpqua. For more information on how to tie, purchase or fish the Maholo Midge click on the image to see more information.
Pyramid Lake Balanced Leeches and Minnows
Pyramid Lake Balanced Leeches (Minnows) are still really new to most Pyramid Lake anglers. The first patterns were tied by Canadian Fly Tier Phil Rowley. We have come up with versions that have driven Cutthroats wild for the past few years including the Olive Martini Banded Balanced Leech pictured on the left. These flies are meant to be fished under an indicator. For more information on how to tie, purchase or fish the Pyramid Lake Balanced Leech click on the image to see more information.
Ike Berry’s Pyramid Lake Beetle
This fly has been used at Pyramid Lake since the 1990’s. Our version of this fly is tied with Loco Foam which has a sheen on the top and seems to really make a difference to unfinished foam. This fly is meant to be fished on a shooting head either by itself or in tandem with another fly. It comes in many colors and is also tied with a tail which turns the name of the fly to “Tadpole” For more information on how to tie, purchase or fish the Pyramid Lake Beetle click on the image to see more information.
Pyramid Lake Wooly Buggers (Wooly Worms)
Most of these flies were originally designed and tied by locals and some of the now closed Reno Fly Shop staff. They have been fished at the lake for decades and are still the best Wooly Bugger type flies fished at Pyramid Lake. There are many variations that have withstood time and continue to catch really big fish at the lake. They are un-weighted and meant to be fished with a shooting head right on the bottom.
