Fish are being caught all kinds of different ways. That is what happens when there are fish around and hungry. This warm weather has them gorging and getting bigger by the day. The big ones want to eat big baits. Balanced Leeches and Wooly worms and Tadpoles are the fly minnow imitations for the lake. Flies | Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing  Midnight Cowboys, Loco Tadpoles in White or Chartreuse and Balanced Minnows in black have been catching some of the biggest fish. You can catch fish with an indicator and a midge or nymph as well. There are midges hatching on most days and the fish are eating them. Turns out Whitney loves Pyramid Lake as much as we do and had a B-Day coming up so she planned a three day trip in November, camped on the beach, ate and drank way too much, caught some amazing fish and decided that people would love to be here and do this with us. What we did not know is Whitney has some very cool friends like her best friend Nikki McGee who is a guide in Utah.  So they brought friends and dogs and cameramen and we had an amazing time. highlighted by Whitneys Birthday. Yay!

Whitney and her best friend Nikki are hosting a private three day outing for 10 lucky people, (mostly women) to come and enjoy the lake with us.  March 15-17 are the dates we picked. right in the middle of the best part of spring and totaly away from the dreadfull full moon.

The Event – March 15-17

Three days Hosted guided fishing with Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing and Whitney and Nikki.  This is a fully catered hosted outing with all meals and just about all the gear you need. Hot coffee in the mornings and a full breakfast, lunch on the lake with the help of our friends @traegergrills. Yum!!!

We are going to have a big camp set up on the beach and anyone signed up is welcome to join us. If you dont want to camp we have amazing rates at the Nugget Resort $49 week day and $69 weekend.

The report is in the past, the future fishing is going to start to change and it already has. This cold weather and snow is the switch. If you watch our seasons explained video on our YouTube channel you will see that every year between now and the end of the month the conditions change, and the 2^nd season is about to start. By the time you get your butt in gear and get to the lake it will probably be full on 2^nd season stuff.

The water temps are cooling daily now. October first the surface temps were around 70 degrees, two weeks later they are down to the low 60’s and the entire lake now has plenty of oxygen for the fish and the bait to roam freely. The fish are still on the hunt for minnows gearing up for the cold winter and the slowing metabolism. Jigging vertical flies like the bottom dweller or the Tuna Can has been so good it is hard to do anything else. As time moves forward, look for the fish to start showing up more in the shallows and stripping Woolybuggers and Tadpoles will be productive on the right days. The shoreline fishing is almost always attached to the weather. Clouds, chop on the surface and low light are your friends. Our online store is stocked and ready. Pyramid will again open to fishing on October 1st. A tradition held by local anglers for many years. The Lore of the World’s Largest Cutthroat Trout attracts attention from all over the world these days and we are excited to see what this season has to offer.

We had an amazing summer. Near or even below normal air temperatures for much of the hot part of the year. After a nearly normal winter in regard to snowpack and water for the lake it looks like everything is going to be perfect when first light sends anglers out in force on October 1st.
The surface temps of the lake this summer reached the 70 degree mark as usual sending the trout into the depths of the lake searching for cooler water temps and more oxygen. It remains to be seen how deep they had to go this time around.

When the lake opens the fish will be deep for sure and a combination of fishing from shore in areas where you can reach deep enough water to fish from the lake in a boat or a smaller craft like a float tube, kayak or pontoon boat. Shore anglers will be limited for a while until the water temps cool down. Not the best time of year for shore fishing. If you know how to fish the lake in October or you have seen our videos, then you are salivating right now waiting for the first tug of the season.
Being able to find at least 30 feet of water is really important at the beginning of the season. Sometimes even deeper. The Trout we are looking for are all eating Tui Chub Minnows and the takes are aggressive and the fish fight really hard. You need to get something in front of them that looks like a minnow. Find the right water depth and you have yourself a shot a real life monster trout.
We use fast sinking lines, deep water wooly buggers, Jigs, Balanced Minnows and some techniques we have developed over the years. All our flies can be found on our online store on the website. Store | Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing

As the water cools down everything starts to change. Cooler surface temps mean more oxygen and more trout looking around for food. This happens sometime towards the end of October. The trout start to spend more time cruising the shallows and the minnows head for the depths of the lake for the winter months to again hide.
The second season starts in early November when the water is cooler now and we drag our ladders back out and approach the lake from the shoreline again. Ladder Rentals | Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing. We normally have great success this time of year with the end of November and the first of December being hot! Most fish are caught with shooting heads and Wooly worms and Beetles this time of year, but it is never a wrong time to fish an indo rig either. Usually, the same beaches we targeted in October out of our boats are where we start from shore. It can be as easy as the fish just moved in shallower in the same spot. At this point in the season, it starts to get important to fish the weather again and look for days with some chop on the water and or cloud cover. Fish early and late and be ready for the random tug.

We have been blessed this summer with the perfect amount of water storage in our mountains and some of the best air temps we have had in July and August in a long time. It is still wet wading season folks. If you’re stuck at work or on the couch it is time to play hooky and get out there. You shouldn’t need a shove but isn’t that what a fishing report is? You’re looking for an excuse to go fishing. So here is the news, or some good ideas anyway.

Truckee River

Well, like I said in the newsletter, this is the summer we have been waiting for, the flows are perfect for the middle of the summer, and the temps are holding steady in a fishable range because the air temps in July were outstanding. The fish are happy and hungry. Heck, they are eating dries in the middle of the day.

Flows have dropped in the past few days, but it is still perfect from Truckee all the way through Reno. Most of the hatches are on their way out but in the evenings, they can still see some action with Caddis and Little Yellow Stones, especially higher up on the river. Summer Golden Stones are out on the lower river and there are even some fish looking up. With the flows dropping here in the past few days, dry dropper rigs should be tried with a golden stone dry and a small dropper like a caddis or even a generic nymph pattern in 16-18.

Little Truckee River

Well, if you like people this is your stream. We went by last week and there were 17 cars in the upper parking lot. (See Truckee Fishing Report) this little stream gets hammered this time of year and our fishing report is just that, a report of there will be a lot of people fishing in a very small stream. The flows are 150 CFS ish and that is absolutely perfect and a little higher than normal for the summer, this will help the pressure some. This fishery is a technical spring creek. It requires stealth, patience and matching the hatch. This is not your lob an indicator 1000 times in a hole fishery. This is why crowds are an even bigger issue here.

East Walker River

This little stream is the one in our area that is affected by low flows and high water temps the most. The snowpack is helping greatly. The flows are 140 CFS. That is amazing for August. This fishery is best for sure in the mornings in the summer no matter what but for sure you can fish all day right now. This is a great place to try out your dry dropper rigs with a Hopper or a Yellow Stone and a small midge, Baetis or San Juan dropper.

If your alone, fish two rods, one with a straight big dry and another with a smaller indo rig and two small nymphs. Start with a few casts in each hole with the dry and then give it 5 minute rest and come back with the indo rig. If you’re with a buddy, do this and switch it up in each run or hole.

Area Lakes

Even with the cooler summer the lakes in our area like, Frenchman’s, Davis, Eagle and many more it is just too hot on the surface to safely catch and release fish. Our suggestion is to wait until mid-September to start fishing our popular area stillwaters again. The streams are in such good shape that this should not be a problem.

Truckee River

Perfect! Flows, temps, bugs, everything is really good on the river right now. The normal hatches happen in the evenings if you know where to look and Caddis and Little Yellow Stones are out in force. On the lower river Golden Stone husks are starting to show up and nymphing with a Stonefly and a caddis dropper is hard to beat right now. Fish the river anytime but keep an eye out for water temps later in the summer. Mornings and evenings are always the best.

Little Truckee River

The Little Truckee has been running hard, too hard to fish, but it just came down to around 350 CFS which is still out of the banks high. You can fish it but it will require a similar approach to the Big T.  Fish are going to be looking up, but it is going to be tough to get a dry in front of these fish with these flows. Normal fishable flows are more like 50-150 CFS.

East Walker River

135 CFS, these are dream flows, anything between 100 and 200 Cfs is awesome. You can wade safely, cross and not spook too many fish. The water is very clear, and the fish are sitting on the edge of the fast water. They will see you if you don’t pay attention. Nymphing with Midges, Caddis, Little Stones, basically any buggy looking nymphs in size 14-18 will get you in the game. A good drift is a must.

East Carson River

The East Carson continues to slow down with runoff melting fast now. 200 CFS is amazing and if you know the East Carson and how to fish it, you should go now. Evening Caddis and Mayflies are a ton of fun and nymphing the deeper pools during the day is also worth a try.

Frenchman’s

Go! Midges and Callabaetis are hatching daily, and the fish are healthy and happy. You can hang a size 14-16 midge under an indicator and stay busy all day. 6-20 feet of water is the way to go so basically just toss it out there and hang on.

I saw a stocking report a couple of days ago and all the normal spots are receiving fish. The Bridgeport area for sure and all the streams and lakes up through the Sierras. Spring is here. Look at the weather going forward and you will see warm, warm, warm. May is a month at the lake that is traditionally very tough. Even with the new techniques we are using it is tough. You have to have the weather. Wind, clouds, rain, whatever. If it is golfing weather, go play golf. Fish the first hour of the day for sure. Then go play golf. Seriously, if you’re going to the lake, nymphing with light tippet as in 6-8 pound test and size 14-16 midges and nymphs. Go to a place where you see some fish cruising. If you get there for the daybreak bite, then strip a Midnight Cowboy Wooly and a White Loco Tadpole slowly on the bottom. A Good Leader with a Dropper tied on a tag with strong tippet is a must.

The spawn and the effects of it are in full swing right now. May is a tough month at Pyramid Lake. At least for most of us. So much is going on at the same time that it just tends to make fishing seem impossible most days. 99% of the female trout in Pyramid Lake do not get to complete the spawn. They carry eggs around until they spew out in some older fish or they dissolve back into their systems eventually. The males are seen chasing them around for a month or more sometimes. During this time, they just don’t eat much. The males get skinny, and the females work off some extra weight. This all happens at the same time as the weather is tripping out. Warmer, longer days and increasing water temperatures after months of constant cold. The minnows are heading for their summer hideouts, and a lot is going on at the same time. As the fish settle back into their old selves around the end of May the bite will turn around fast and all of a sudden it will be on again.

Rivers and Streams

This is a very normal spring so far in the Reno Tahoe area. 100% snowpack followed by warming weather with some mixed in periods of a cold day or two. This will also be a very normal run-off year in the mountains. Popular rivers and streams are going to be affected by higher flows for the next month or more. Some of them will be blown out for a period of time, others just tough to fish and wade. The best advice I can give you for your next fishing adventure is not the exact fly but the best conditions and a water that maybe you are familiar with until the runoff subsides. Check the stream flows before you go and be prepared to fish the edges, use more weight while nymphing and probably there is no reason to start too early. The water in the streams is going to be cold for a while.

Lakes and Reservoirs (Not Named Pyramid)

The local stillwaters could be the answer for the next month, psst… that is where we will be. Warmer water sparks the bugs hatching and the fish feeding and the fun starting. There are so many stillwaters in both California and Nevada that fish well in May, especially Nevada. Some require some planning and a couple of days to fish and others can be done in a day.

Pyramid Lake has benefited from the last few winters and the water conditions at the lake are great. This immediately effects the Tui Chub minnow population and health. There is plenty of food available for the big fish. Good News/ Bad News, I guess.

April is here and so is the spawn. There are fish around the shorelines cruising and looking for a place to reproduce. This phenomenon has changed over the years and looks nothing like it did 10 years ago but it still happens to some degree. Warm weather and high pressure that comes along with spring months make fishing tough. Glass sunny conditions on the water make fish lethargic. Fishing first and last light on these days is the way to go. Any day that has some wind forecast or cloud cover is going to be better.

Stripping woolies and beetles with a shooting head first thing in the morning is the best advice we can give. Midnight Cowboys, Northern Lights Tadpoles, Chartreuse Beetles and Martini Olive Wolly Worms are all catching fish. Indicator flies are getting smaller. Size 14 Albino Wino’s and Copper Wino’s should be on your line. Don’t get to married to balanced leeches, they get a lot less effective when the weather is nice. Try one of our new leaders. They make rigging with either the Indicator Leader or the Streamer Leader way easier and also make it easier to change flies.
