Pyramid Lake
Its May and the fish are either in spawn mode or coming out of it. May is tough at the lake, the water is warming fast, the algae has been growing for some time and a large number of fish are just not eating. This is May at Pyramid Lake. This is the month that most of the other lakes and reservoirs in the West start to turn on. This is the month to do something else. If you have watched our videos over the past few years we will explain this situation in detail. Here is the video
If you’re going to the lake, then fish in the rocky areas with an indicator rig. Go on cloudy windy days and keep an eye on your flies for Gue and moss. Downsize your leader and tippet and flies on calm days. Size 16 midges on 4x tippet. Albino Wino’s, Copper Wino’s and G.T.’s are great choices for midges. These fish are picky. Early in the morning and late when the sun is off the water is your best time to strip. Use foam backed flies such as a Tadpole or Beetle to try to keep away from the moss. Strip slowly and allow the foam to float the fly a little.
All other Stillwaters in the Sierras
The water is warming and if your favorite lake is being taken care of correctly now is the time to go check it out. Midges are out in force at most of these lakes. Callabaetis could also be hatching, and we are right around the corner from some very large ants flying around. We have already seen Damsel nymphs in some stomachs.
We travel to Eastern Nevada for the month of May to take advantage of some amazing Stillwater fishing. There are so many bodies of water to choose from. They are all in good shape. We have been making this journey for almost 15 years now and our outings sell out every year. If you would like to join us in May 2027 now is the time to let us know. We have an amazing camp set up at one of these lakes where we cater all the food for a three day fishing extravaganza. Call us now if you want to be on the list for next year. 775.742.1754
Rivers
The snowpack in the Sierra is below average for the year. The authorities will be holding back as much water as possible to start the irrigation season and all the rivers in our area are worth fishing. Go now, if we have a hot summer it could be a factor later in the summer with low flows and warm water. Access is also not a problem. Great choices right now would be the little Truckee, the East Walker, Truckee and any of the rivers on the west slopes.
