The opener at the lake was fantastic. The conditions set up perfectly for our early season tactics and our anglers had a blast! We did some extensive scouting before the season and located a large amount of bait. Not only the Tui Chubs which can reach 12 or 13 inches but a ton of Sacramento Pearch Frey hiding out above the ledge in very shallow water. We found the entire food chain. The big Chubs feast on the Pearch Frey and between the birds and all the fish it was simply amazing. 25 years guiding the lake has given us a clear vision of how the lake fishes all 9 months its open.

The report is in the past, the future fishing is going to start to change and it already has. This cold weather and snow is the switch. If you watch our seasons explained video on our YouTube channel you will see that every year between now and the end of the month the conditions change, and the 2nd season is about to start. By the time you get your butt in gear and get to the lake it will probably be full on 2nd season stuff.

The water temps are cooling daily now. October first the surface temps were around 70 degrees, two weeks later they are down to the low 60’s and the entire lake now has plenty of oxygen for the fish and the bait to roam freely. The fish are still on the hunt for minnows gearing up for the cold winter and the slowing metabolism. Jigging vertical flies like the bottom dweller or the Tuna Can has been so good it is hard to do anything else. As time moves forward, look for the fish to start showing up more in the shallows and stripping Woolybuggers and Tadpoles will be productive on the right days. The shoreline fishing is almost always attached to the weather. Clouds, chop on the surface and low light are your friends. Our online store is stocked and ready. A Streamer guide pack is a great way to have a box of the best Pyramid Flies ready for your next trip.
