Pyramid will again open to fishing on October 1st. A tradition held by local anglers for many years. The Lore of the World’s Largest Cutthroat Trout attracts attention from all over the world these days and we are excited to see what this season has to offer.

We had an amazing summer. Near or even below normal air temperatures for much of the hot part of the year. After a nearly normal winter in regard to snowpack and water for the lake it looks like everything is going to be perfect when first light sends anglers out in force on October 1st.
The surface temps of the lake this summer reached the 70 degree mark as usual sending the trout into the depths of the lake searching for cooler water temps and more oxygen. It remains to be seen how deep they had to go this time around.

When the lake opens the fish will be deep for sure and a combination of fishing from shore in areas where you can reach deep enough water to fish from the lake in a boat or a smaller craft like a float tube, kayak or pontoon boat. Shore anglers will be limited for a while until the water temps cool down. Not the best time of year for shore fishing. If you know how to fish the lake in October or you have seen our videos, then you are salivating right now waiting for the first tug of the season.
Being able to find at least 30 feet of water is really important at the beginning of the season. Sometimes even deeper. The Trout we are looking for are all eating Tui Chub Minnows and the takes are aggressive and the fish fight really hard. You need to get something in front of them that looks like a minnow. Find the right water depth and you have yourself a shot a real life monster trout.

As the water cools down everything starts to change. Cooler surface temps mean more oxygen and more trout looking around for food. This happens sometime towards the end of October. The trout start to spend more time cruising the shallows and the minnows head for the depths of the lake for the winter months to again hide.
The second season starts in early November when the water is cooler now and we drag our ladders back out and approach the lake from the shoreline again. Ladder Rentals | Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing. We normally have great success this time of year with the end of November and the first of December being hot! Most fish are caught with shooting heads and Wooly worms and Beetles this time of year, but it is never a wrong time to fish an indo rig either. Usually, the same beaches we targeted in October out of our boats are where we start from shore. It can be as easy as the fish just moved in shallower in the same spot. At this point in the season, it starts to get important to fish the weather again and look for days with some chop on the water and or cloud cover. Fish early and late and be ready for the random tug.
